Have you noticed your weight fluctuating over the years? One minute you feel amazing, and the next, you’re wondering why your clothes don’t fit. If that sounds familiar, take a deep breath—you are not alone! Life, fitness, and weight management are never a straight, flat line. Let’s explore why this happens, why it’s completely normal, and how to manage it with kindness and awareness.
Why Weight Fluctuations Are Perfectly Normal
Even for those of us deeply invested in fitness, weight and energy levels ebb and flow. It’s part of being human. Life brings stress, joy, challenges, and change—all of which can impact our health. Here are some common factors that affect weight and fitness:
- Stress: It can lead to overeating for some or weight loss for others.
- Busy Schedules: Lack of time can mean missed workouts and poor eating habits.
- Emotional Eating: Using food to cope with life’s ups and downs is a common response.
Instead of feeling ashamed, recognize these as normal parts of life’s rhythm. Embrace them as learning moments, not failures.
Step 1: Stop Beating Yourself Up
We often hold unrealistic expectations. If our weight shifts or our fitness declines, we judge ourselves harshly. But remember: you are not a machine. Ups and downs are inevitable.
Self-kindness is your first step to making peace with life’s roller-coaster:
- Speak to yourself as you would to a friend. Would you shame them for gaining a few kilos? Of course not!
- Accept that maintaining perfect fitness 100% of the time is not feasible—for anyone.
Your worth is not defined by a number on the scale.
Step 2: Awareness Is Key
Before you can make positive changes, you need to understand your situation. Ask yourself:
- What’s currently impacting my health and fitness?
- Am I dealing with overwhelming stress, a packed schedule, or emotional challenges?
Example: I personally experienced a chaotic period where I was working full-time, running bootcamps, studying, and launching a business. My health suffered, and my waistline expanded. Looking back, I realise I had chosen to prioritise career growth over fitness—and that’s okay. Now that phase has passed, I’m focusing on restoring my health.
When life feels out of control, forcing yourself into a strict diet or rigid workout plan will likely fail. Instead, shift your attention to changing the circumstances causing your struggle.
Step 3: Choose What to Focus On
Awareness leads to action. To regain balance:
- Identify one or two simple, impactful changes.
- Example: Schedule 30 minutes of movement twice a week or replace sugary snacks with healthy alternatives.
- Gradually build healthier habits instead of trying to overhaul your life overnight.
Remember, it’s okay to ask for help. Many of my past clients have returned to work with me after taking breaks due to life changes like having children or facing health challenges. They know firsthand how much difference support and accountability can make.
The Power of Support
Reaching out for guidance doesn’t mean failure—it means you’re ready to prioritise yourself again. Life’s ups and downs are part of the journey, and getting back on track is always possible.
If you’re ready to refocus on your health and fitness:
- Be kind to yourself. No more negative self-talk.
- Acknowledge what needs to change. Identify the root cause of your challenges.
- Seek support. Find a coach, a community, or resources that align with your goals.
Remeber, life isn’t a perfect, predictable path. It’s a roller-coaster filled with twists, turns, and loops. The key to thriving isn’t avoiding the ride—it’s learning how to hold on, adapt, and enjoy the view. Start with kindness, take small steps, and remember: you’re amazing just as you are.
