How Social Connections Transformed My Health & Happiness

Back in 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. As you can imagine, it turned my world upside down. I was suddenly thrown into a world of hospital appointments, deep levels of stress, anxiety, worry, and physical challenges. To say it was hard would be an understatement.

But here’s the thing—I don’t look back on that time as bad. In fact, I look back on it with gratitude.

Why? Because I was completely blown away by the support I had from family and friends, both in person and online. The messages, the phone calls, the check-ins—they made all the difference. The kindness I received helped me navigate one of the hardest times in my life. It was so powerful that I even blogged about my journey, partly because writing helped me process it all, but also because the comments and kind words I received lifted me up in ways I can’t even describe.

Watch my video below, where I share my cancer journey and the profound impact social connections had on my life. (I originally made this as a small thank-you to my family—to let them know I was okay!)

Why Social Connection is Vital for Your Health

We often focus on diet and exercise when we think about health, but the truth is, your social connections play a massive role in your overall well-being. Science shows that strong relationships can:

✔ Lower blood pressure and inflammation
✔ Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementia
✔ Strengthen the immune system, helping fight off illness
✔ Increase lifespan—people with strong social ties tend to live longer

Social bonds don’t just make us feel good—they keep us physically healthier too.

The Mental & Emotional Benefits of Connection

Beyond physical health, staying socially engaged can:

✔ Reduce anxiety and depression
✔ Boost self-esteem and emotional resilience
✔ Increase motivation and overall happiness

Essentially, meaningful relationships create a positive feedback loop—the more we engage, the better we feel, and the better we feel, the more we want to engage!

Practical Ways to Strengthen Your Social Connections

If you want to boost your health by deepening your relationships, try these simple steps:

💬 Reach out to an old friend – Send a quick message or schedule a short catch-up. Small efforts make a big impact.

🚶‍♀️ Join a walking group or fitness class – Moving with others is a great way to build bonds while improving health.

🍽 Make social meals a priority – Even a casual coffee date strengthens connections.

🎭 Find a social hobby – Book clubs, community groups, or volunteering are all great ways to meet people.

📵 Go screen-free for an hour a day – Swap social media scrolling for a real conversation.

🧘‍♀️ Be present – Put down your phone and truly engage when spending time with loved ones.

My Challenge to You: Connect More!

If there’s one thing my experience taught me, it’s this: don’t wait until you need support to build your social connections. Strengthen them now, and they will strengthen you in return.
